About a year ago, Chris introduced me to sloe gin at a spirits tasting event in San Francisco. It was all downhill from there.

Sloe Gin is a dark red liqueur made by infusing gin with sloe berries. (Yep, that’s s-l-o-e, not s-l-o-w.) Sugar is added to add to the berries’ extraction, resulting in a tasty semi-sweet, berry flavored liqueur between 15-30% ABV. If I had to describe the sloe berry flavor I’d say it tastes almost of blueberries… but not quite.

The Sloe Royale

This week’s cocktail is about as simple as it gets. It’s basically a Kir Royale made with Sloe Gin instead of Creme de Cassis and sparkling wine instead of Champagne. It takes about 15 seconds to make and approximately 5 seconds to consume. (Yes, it’s that good!)

Of course, you can make this drink with virtually any liqueur – but if you can get your hands on a bottle of Sloe gin, I’d absolutely give it a try.
