Part 1: THE OLD FASHIONED

It’s a little sweet and a bit boozy, but this cocktail is as delicious as it is easy to make! Let’s kick off your cocktail journey with a cocktail that’s sure to please.

A RECIPE FOR ANY BOTTLE…

CLASSIC OLD FASHIONED

TEQUILA OLD FASHIONED

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Celery Bitters

RUM OLD FASHIONED

GIN OLD FASHIONED

VODKA OLD FASHIONED

BRANDY OLD FASHIONED**

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Add ingredients and ice to a cheater tin and stir for about 30 seconds.
  • Add fresh ice to a bucket/old fashioned glass and strain cocktail into glassware
  • Garnish with orange zest and /or brandied cherry.

*If you are using a flavored rum it is likely sweetened, so you’ll want to use less Simple Syrup

**Not to be confused with a Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned, which is different (and also delicious!)

*Using Agave Syrup makes it a Tommy’s Margarita!
**This is basically a simplified Lemon Drop

Easy Cocktail at Home

Sign up here and I’ll send you a PDF quick guide, plus a link so you can come back another time. (Happy hour, perhaps?)

Ingredients

Hopefully you have all of these ingredients already at home, but just in case you don’t, I’ve included links for where you can (hopefully) get them delivered. You’ll be mixing in no time!

FOR THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL NEED:

  • One bottle of liquor (see suggestions below)
  • Angostura Bitters
  • 3-4 Lemons or Limes
  • 1 cup of White Sugar

Click the boxes below for more tips!

Liquor Suggestions & Links

Hopefully you can use the alternate recipes above to use the spirits you already have in your liquor cabinet, but just in case you’ve run out, here are some of our favorite “safe bet” spirits you can get delivered.

If you aren’t sure where to start, I’d recommend one bottle of the Whiskey below. It’ll be all you need for this workshop and a safe choice for dozens more!

Here’s our List:

We’ve provided links to Drizly, an alcohol delivery service. Buying through these links is totally optional but helps support A Bar Above. Thanks!

Note: This list was so hard to make! There are so many great brands – don’t be concerned if your favorite brand isn’t listed. This list is just a starting point.

Cocktail Bitters

You can find Cocktail Bitters at most liquor stores. Angostura Bitters is the most common, and it’s what we’re using for this workshop. It will also be useful for dozens of great drinks. You can find it on Amazon or Drizly.

Citrus

To make all three cocktails in this workshop, ideally you’d want about 3-4 lemons or limes.

Hint: If you’re mixing with a brown spirit (like whiskey or an aged rum) then use lemons. If you’re using a clear spirit like Gin or Blanco Tequila, use limes.

Sugar & Simple Syrup

We’ll show you how to make Simple Syrup (it’s super easy!) To make enough for all three cocktails, you’ll need about half a cup of white table sugar.

A few other options:

  • If you don’t have any white sugar, you can substitute brown or demerara sugar for your Simple Syrup. It will work best with darker spirits like whiskey or aged rum.
  • If you’re watching your carbs, we’ve had good luck with this low-carb Simple Syrup in cocktails.
